A new US government-backed campaign aims to double the number of American students studying abroad by 2020.
The Institute of International Education (IIE) has launched Generation Study Abroad, an international programme which aims to increase numbers of US students with overseas experience from 295,000 in 2011/12 to 600,000 by the end of the decade.
IIE has already committed $2 million (£1.2 million) to the initiative, which is supported by more than 150 higher education institutions across the US, as well as a group of national governments and higher education associations around the world.
