UK academics among lowest paid in English-speaking world, union claims

UK academics are among the lowest paid in the English-speaking world, according to analysis from the University and College Union.

The union found that only New Zealand academics are paid less than those in the UK, with British lecturers earning less than those in Canada, USA and Australia.

According to UCU’s calculations, UK academics earn an average of £34,398 compared to £49,959 in Canada - the English-speaking country with the highest paid lecturers.

The analysis is based on findings in a 2012 survey by professional service firm Deloitte.

The announcement comes ahead of a full day strike planned by members of Unison, Unite and the EIS trade unions on Thursday, February 6 over an ongoing pay dispute with university employers.
