The naturalist and television presenter Sir David Attenborough has opened a £1.5 million fully-inclusive gallery extension at the University of Leicester championed by his brother Lord Attenborough.
The new extension has approximately 530 square metres of new accommodation, increasing the size of the existing building by 50 per cent, and providing three new interlinked gallery spaces together with an external sculpture garden. The gallery will be the largest contemporary art space in Leicestershire and one of the largest in the East Midlands. It will be open to the general public to showcase the best in contemporary visual art and sculpture.
During his campus visit, Sir David also delivered the University’s flagship Chancellor’s Distinguished Lecture on Beauty in Nature.
