The SHIELD Consortium led by the University of Sheffield, with partners from Edinburgh, Birmingham and Newcastle universities, has received £3.5 million funding from the Medical Research Council to investigate new ways to combat antimicrobial resistance with super white blood cells.
The team will focus on increasing the body’s own ability to combat antibiotic-resistant bacteria by enhancing the capacity of phagocytes - a special type of white blood cell that eat and kill bacteria.
