Five UK universities in top 20 of global green ranking

The green credentials of five UK universities have earned them places in the top 20 of an international league table of environmentally-friendly institutions.

The University of Nottingham has topped the fourth GreenMetric World University Ranking – beating 300 other participating universities from 61 countries.

The University of Bradford, the University of Plymouth, the University of Bath and Bangor University also held positions in the top 20.

The league table is put together by academics at the Universitas Indonesia. It was launched in 2010 as a way of highlighting campus sustainability and environmentally-friendly university management.

Universities around the world are invited to submit data, with rankings based on their performances across six areas - setting and infrastructure, energy and climate change, waste management, water usage, transportation, and education.

The rankings are also intended to show how universities can play a part in achieving the UN’s Sustainability Development Goals. These are a set of targets for developing key global issues by 2015, including in the areas of environmental sustainability and education.

Professor Muhammad Anis, rector of the Universitas Indonesia, said: “We hope that the rankings will be useful to university leaders in their efforts to put in place eco-friendly policies and manage behavioural change among the academic community at their respective institutions.”
