Far East dominates younger university rankings

Universities in the Far East have once again dominated the top spots in a world ranking for institutions which are less than 50 years old.

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) has topped this year’s QS Top 50 under 50 ranking for the second year in a row.

The list is compiled by university ranking researchers QS Quacquarelli Symonds. It is based on the results from the QS World University Rankings 2013/14, which ranks the world's top 800 universities.

HKUST was formed in 1991 and came 33rd in the overall QS world rankings this year.

It was followed by the Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore, in second place, and the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) in third place.

Maastricht University in the Netherlands is the top ranked European university in sixth place - rising one place since last year. Maastricht was founded in 1976, and is ranked 121 in the QS overall world rankings for 2013/14.

While last year’s 50 under 50 list included seven UK universities, this year’s list contains only three. The University of Bath took 11th place, with Loughborough University ranked 16th and Brunel University coming in at number 48.

Three of last year’s UK entrants - The University of Warwick, Lancaster University and the University of Essex - turned 50 years old this year, and so are no longer included in the list. Aston University, which was ranked 49th last year, dropped out of the Top 50.

Ben Sowter, head of research at QS, said: “The dynamic nature of this ranking makes it an interesting comparison with our global and regional rankings.

“By focusing on the performance of these younger institutions alone, the list aims to spot the up-and-coming higher education powerhouses in the global arena.”
